Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island federation in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, with about 261 square kilometers of territory, the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere by both area and population. It declared independence from the United Kingdom on 19 September 1983. Its capital is Basseterre.
