Earth's second-largest ocean, separating the Americas from Europe and Africa and connecting the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south. Its mid-ocean ridge, an underwater mountain chain marking the boundary of separating tectonic plates, runs nearly its full length and continues to widen the ocean by a few centimeters a year.
