Tonga is an island country in Polynesia, part of Oceania, made up of 171 islands, of which 45 are inhabited, scattered over about 700,000 square kilometers of the southern Pacific Ocean. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 4 June 1970. It is a constitutional monarchy, and its capital is Nukualofa.
