Kiribati is an archipelagic country spanning the Micronesia and Polynesia sub-regions of Oceania in the central Pacific Ocean. It comprises 32 atolls and one raised coral island, Banaba, with a total land area of about 811 square kilometers dispersed across more than 3.4 million square kilometers of ocean. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 12 July 1979. Its capital is Tarawa.
