A subregion of Oceania in the western Pacific comprising roughly 2,000 small islands across four main archipelagos, the Caroline, Gilbert, Mariana and Marshall Islands, along with Nauru and Wake Island. Political control is split among five sovereign states, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau, and territories including Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Alongside Melanesia and Polynesia it completes the classical three-way division of Pacific Oceania, distinguished from the other two by a wide oceanic spread over a comparatively small total land area.
