Nauru is an island country and microstate in the South Pacific Ocean, within the Micronesia sub-region of Oceania, with its nearest neighbor Banaba about 300 kilometers to the east. At 21 square kilometers it is one of the smallest countries in the world. It gained independence from Australia on 31 January 1968. Its de facto capital is Yaren.
