The Balkans is the mountainous peninsula of southeastern Europe bounded by the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean, and Black Seas, home to a dense mix of languages, religions, and successor states left by the retreat of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires. Its name comes from the Balkan Mountains running through Bulgaria.
